Burnout: Questions and Answers

Elizabeth H. Hoffman, Ph.D.

You have probably heard these expressions, perhaps you have even uttered them to yourself:

  • "My stress level is too high."
  • "I can’t keep up this pace."
  • "I think I’m headed for burnout."

What is "burnout" and how is it different from "stress?"

Stress and burnout are not the same thing. Burnout is the effect of continued, unrelenting stress on both your physical and emotional state. When you hit burnout, your coping skills have reached their limit.

What does burnout really mean? What are the symptoms?

Emotional exhaustion: Total depletion of emotional resources, known as "compassion fatigue." You just can’t give any more.

Depersonalization: Insensitive attitude, sometimes cold and callous to other people. You can’t relate to other people’s feelings.

Reduced sense of accomplishment: Feelings of low self-esteem, failure and inadequacy. You are apathetic and frustrated by everyone and everything.

Withdrawal from friends, family and co-workers: Feelings of disillusionment and helplessness.

Are some people more susceptible to burnout than others? How can you prevent burnout?

Learn the answers to these and other important questions in our future workshops and newsletters. It can be a slippery slope from stressful circumstances to physical, emotional and spiritual burnout. We can help. Stay tuned!
